About Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park

Aloha! Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park covers a 15-mile stretch of rugged coastline featuring some of the most dramatic scenery in Hawaii – towering sea cliffs rising 4,000 feet above the Pacific, lush valleys, and cascading waterfalls.

The famous Kalalau Trail is the primary access point, starting at Ke'e Beach. For day hikers, the first two miles to Hanakapi'ai Beach offer stunning views without requiring permits. If you're planning to camp overnight in Kalalau Valley, you'll need permits from the Kauai State Parks Office – they're walk-in only and limited, so plan ahead.

The park is open daily from 7 AM to 6:45 PM. Starting early helps you beat the crowds and heat. Bring plenty of water, sturdy hiking boots, and your camera to capture the views. The trail can be challenging with narrow sections and stream crossings, so assess your fitness level honestly before attempting it.

Weather can change quickly along the coast, so pack layers and rain gear. During winter months, ocean conditions can be rougher, making some beach access more dangerous. The park showcases the raw natural beauty Kauai offers – dramatic cliffs, lush valleys, and coastal wilderness few places can match.
