About Koke'e State Park
Aloha! Koke'e State Park is one of Kauai's most spectacular natural areas. Perched high in the mountains next to Waimea Canyon, this 4,345-acre park offers a completely different side of the island—cool temperatures, native forests, and breathtaking views of the Na Pali Coast.
The park features 45 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy nature walks to seriously challenging backcountry adventures. The Awa'awapuhi and Pu'u O Kila trails offer stunning cliff-top views, while the nature loop near the museum works well for families. Keep in mind these aren't typical beach hikes—the terrain can be muddy and steep, so bring proper hiking shoes and layers.
Weather up here changes quickly, so pack a rain jacket even on sunny days. The best time to visit is early morning when clouds are less likely to obscure the views. There's no entrance fee, and parking is available at various trailheads, though it fills up fast on weekends.
Stop by the Koke'e Natural History Museum first to grab trail maps and learn about the unique ecosystem. The lodge nearby serves local-style food if you work up an appetite. The cooler mountain air and incredible vistas make this challenging journey worth the effort.
