Kalalau Trail

Aloha. The Kalalau Trail demands respect and preparation—this is serious hiking. This legendary 11-mile trail along the Na Pali Coast is stunning, but it's no joke. You'll traverse narrow ridges, cross streams, and navigate challenging terrain with dramatic drop-offs to the ocean below.

The trail starts at Ke'e Beach and takes you through diverse landscapes—from lush valleys to exposed cliffsides with breathtaking coastal views. Many hikers turn around at Hanakapi'ai Beach (2 miles) or Falls (4 miles), which makes for a challenging but manageable day hike. Going beyond requires overnight permits and serious backpacking experience.

Best time to hike is during drier months, typically April through October, though weather can change quickly. Start early—sunrise is ideal—and bring plenty of water, sturdy hiking boots with good grip, sun protection, and rain gear. The trail can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain.

Parking at Ke'e Beach fills up fast, so arrive early or consider the shuttle system. Remember, permits are required if you're camping or hiking beyond Hanakapi'ai.
