Spouting Horn

Aloha! Spouting Horn in Poipu is one of Kauaʻi's most accessible natural attractions—a geological blowhole where ocean swells create a dramatic natural display daily.

Here's how it works: thousands of years ago, lava flows created an underwater cave system with a narrow opening at the top. When ocean swells rush into this lava tube, the water gets compressed and shoots up through the hole like a geyser, creating sprays that can reach 50 feet high during big surf days. Ancient Hawaiians called it "puhi"—you'll understand why when you hear that distinctive whooshing sound.

You'll see the most impressive displays during high tide or when there's a good south swell. Winter months often bring the most dramatic shows. At sunset, the golden light catches the mist in striking ways.

Parking is free and easy, with a short walk from your car—accessible for all ages and mobility levels. The viewing area is well-maintained with safety barriers, though the rocks can be slippery and waves unpredictable, so stay behind them.
