Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge
Perched on Kauai's dramatic northern cliffs, this wildlife refuge features the historic Kilauea Point Lighthouse and thousands of nesting seabirds. You'll enjoy spectacular ocean views from 180-foot bluffs while spotting whales, dolphins, and native Hawaiian birds. Open Wednesday through Saturday with required advance reservations.
About Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge
Aloha! Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge ranks among Kauai's most distinctive destinations. Perched on the northernmost tip of the main Hawaiian Islands, this refuge sits on a dramatic 180-foot ocean bluff with commanding views across the Pacific.
The historic Daniel K. Inouye Kilauea Point Lighthouse has stood here since 1913, serving as a navigational beacon. The refuge draws visitors primarily for its seabird populations—you'll spot red-footed boobies, Laysan albatross, and great frigatebirds nesting on the cliffs.
Plan your visit accordingly: the refuge is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM. Visitors 16 and older must make reservations in advance due to limited parking and a timed entry system. Morning visits offer optimal lighting and peak bird activity.
Winter months bring the best whale-watching conditions, and you might see dolphins year-round from the clifftop vantage points. The site offers accessible pathways suitable for all visitors. Bring binoculars and a camera with adequate zoom capability—the views stretch miles along the North Shore coastline, especially on clear days.
