Holoholoku Heiau
Step into one of Kauai's most ancient sacred sites, where Hawaiian royalty once gave birth and solemn ceremonies honored the gods. This heiau near Wailua River offers a cultural experience connecting visitors to the island's spiritual traditions and pre-contact history.
About Holoholoku Heiau
Holoholoku Heiau, believed to be Kauai's oldest temple site, is located in Wailua River State Park on the East Side. This ancient heiau holds deep spiritual significance as a former luakini (sacrificial temple) where human offerings were made to the gods under the traditional kapu system.
The site sits in proximity to the Royal Birthstones, where Hawaiian ali'i (royalty) would give birth. The heiau's Hawaiian name "Ka Lae o Ka Manu" means "the crest of the bird," and you'll notice the stone walls were built with pieces of branch coral—a marker of its sacred status.
This is hallowed ground deserving utmost respect. Walk quietly, don't climb on the stone structures, and take a moment to feel the mana (spiritual energy) of this ancient place. Many visitors find it deeply moving to stand where ancestors conducted their most solemn ceremonies.
The site has moderate accessibility with some uneven terrain, so wear sturdy shoes. Early morning or late afternoon visits offer the best lighting and fewer crowds. You'll find parking at Wailua River State Park. This cultural site offers an authentic look into pre-contact Hawaiian spirituality—approach with reverence and leave with a deeper understanding of the island's sacred history.
