Waipo'o Falls
Kauai's tallest waterfall at 800 feet, Waipo'o Falls rewards hikers with an unforgettable 3.8-mile journey through Waimea Canyon. This intermediate trail offers stunning canyon views and ends at a spectacular viewpoint overlooking the cascade.
Check trail conditions before you go
Kauaʻi waterfall trails can flood, wash out, or close without notice. Flash floods, slippery rock, sheer drop-offs, and sudden weather changes are real risks — people get hurt or die here every year. Cell service is spotty to non-existent on most trails. Tell someone your plan, carry water, turn back if conditions look off. Never swim in a waterfall pool if it's raining anywhere upstream — flash floods arrive without warning.

About Waipo'o Falls
Waipo'o Falls is the crown jewel of Kauai's waterfalls. At 800 feet, it's the island's tallest waterfall, and the hike delivers the views to match. You'll tackle a moderate 3.8-mile trail through Waimea Canyon with about 800-900 feet of elevation gain. The trail difficulty increases noticeably when conditions are wet or muddy, making it more challenging than usual.
Plan your visit for a partly cloudy day when the lighting is ideal for photography and the sun won't be as intense. The trail can get muddy with steep sections and loose dirt, so wear hiking shoes with good grip. Check weather conditions before you go and bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a light snack for the 2-3 hour journey.
Park at the Waimea Canyon lookouts and follow the Canyon Trail signs. The trailhead is well-marked, but arrive early to secure parking—it fills up fast, especially on weekends. The viewpoint gives you spectacular views of the falls across the canyon. You won't reach the actual base of the falls on the standard trail, but the distant view is striking and ideal for photos. The mist creates beautiful rainbows in the afternoon light. Safety note: stick to the marked trail and don't attempt unofficial paths to get closer to the falls, as these can be dangerous. The canyon lookouts themselves offer excellent vistas on your way in or out.
