About Wai'oli Hui'ia Church
Aloha! Wai'oli Hui'ia Church on the North Shore is one of Kauai's most significant historic landmarks. This green church, founded in 1834, sits against the dramatic backdrop of Hanalei's mountains. What sets this place apart is both its architectural character and its resilience—this sanctuary has weathered multiple hurricanes and remains standing today.
The church has deep Hawaiian roots, having grown under the guidance of Hawaiian ministers. By 1945, it united with the Wanini and Ha'ena Churches to become what you see today. Right next door stands the historic Waioli Mission House from 1837, where early missionaries lived.
You're welcome to join their traditional Hawaiian-style worship service on Sunday mornings at 10 am. For tours of the mission house, visit on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays. The church offers easy access and free parking, making it accessible for all visitors.
Visit in the morning when the light hits the green exterior well, and you can easily combine it with exploring nearby Hanalei town. The location captures an important chapter of Hawaii's spiritual history.
