Poli'ahu Heiau
Step into ancient Hawaii at this sacred heiau overlooking the Wailua River. Built by the legendary Menehune, Poli'ahu offers powerful spiritual energy and stunning valley views. Part of Kauai's National Historic Landmark complex, this 165-by-242-foot temple site invites respectful exploration of Native Hawaiian culture and centuries-old traditions.
About Poli'ahu Heiau
Aloha. Poli'ahu Heiau is one of Kauai's most sacred places, holding deep spiritual significance for Native Hawaiians. This ancient temple sits above the Wailua River, part of the Wailua Complex of Heiau that earned National Historic Landmark status in 1962.
Legend says the Menehune, Kauai's mythical little people, built this impressive 165-by-242-foot heiau beneath the sacred peak of Maunakapu. While you'll mainly see stone foundations and terraces today, imagine the ceremonies that once took place here, complete with a lele (altar platform) where offerings were made.
This is sacred ground deserving utmost respect. Walk quietly, don't climb on the structures, and avoid removing anything—not even a small stone. Many visitors find the mana (spiritual energy) here quite powerful, especially during sunrise or sunset when the light hits Kalepa Ridge.
You'll find Poli'ahu along Kuamo'o Road, just up from Holoholoku Heiau. The moderate hike offers stunning valley views, but wear good shoes as the terrain can be uneven. Early morning visits are ideal—fewer crowds and cooler temperatures. Take time to reflect on the centuries of Hawaiian culture and spirituality this place represents.
