About Poipu Bay Golf Course
Poipu Bay Golf Course is an 18-hole championship par-72 course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 1991. Located on Kauai's South Shore, it stretches over 7,123 yards and combines challenging play with oceanfront scenery.
The 16th hole stands out as the course's signature—a dramatic oceanfront cliffside hole with ancient Hawaiian ruins nearby, earning it the nickname "the Pebble Beach of the Pacific." The 17th hole, a par-3, crosses a ravine with the Pacific on the left side.
The course design incorporates Hawaiian cultural elements throughout, including ancient heiau (temples) and lava rock walls integrated into the layout. With 85 bunkers and five water hazards, Poipu Bay demands strategic play and suits intermediate to advanced golfers.
You'll find early morning tee times offer optimal lighting and lighter crowds. Trade winds typically pick up later in the day, adding complexity to the ocean-facing holes.
