About Hikina'akala Heiau
Hikina'akala Heiau, meaning "Rising Sun Temple," sits at the northern end of Lydgate Beach Park near the Wailua River mouth. This ancient Hawaiian temple is part of the Wailua Complex of Heiaus, a National Historic Landmark with deep cultural significance for Native Hawaiians.
The site was traditionally used to welcome each new day with chants and prayers celebrating the sunrise. Only the foundation stones remain today from what was once a large rectangular enclosure with walls up to 6 feet high, though the spiritual mana (power) of this place remains present.
Approach this heiau with respect and reverence. Walk quietly, don't climb on the stone foundations, and take a moment to appreciate the cultural heritage you're witnessing. This is a sacred space that deserves utmost respect.
The best time to visit is early morning, especially around sunrise, to experience the site as it was traditionally intended. Parking is available at Lydgate Beach Park, and the moderate walk takes you through coastal scenery. The heiau is accessible daily from 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM.
