Alakai Swamp Trail
Adventure through one of the world's wettest places on this challenging 7-mile trek across ancient swamplands. Wooden boardwalks guide you through primordial forest where rare Hawaiian birds call home. The trail is muddy and otherworldly—a direct encounter with Kauai's geological and ecological past.
Check trail conditions before you go
Kauaʻi trails can flood, wash out, or close without notice. Flash floods, slippery rock, sheer drop-offs, and sudden weather changes are real risks — people get hurt or die here every year. Cell service is spotty to non-existent on most trails. Tell someone your plan, carry water, turn back if conditions look off.

About Alakai Swamp Trail
Aloha! The Alakai Swamp Trail is one of Kauai's most remarkable adventures - a 7-mile out-and-back journey through one of the world's wettest places, crossing ancient swamplands via wooden boardwalks that feel like walking through another era entirely.
This is a challenging hike with 1,410 feet of elevation gain that'll take 3.5 to 4 hours. The trail gets muddy, slippery, and can be foggy, so come prepared with sturdy hiking boots, rain gear, and plenty of water. You'll spot rare native Hawaiian birds like the Kauai elepaio and experience untouched wilderness that few visitors ever see.
The trailhead starts about a quarter-mile north of the Na Pali Kona Forest Reserve entrance sign - look for the small parking area. Early morning hikes offer the best chance for clearer skies and bird activity, though weather here is notoriously unpredictable. No permits needed, but check conditions beforehand as the trail can close during heavy rains.
You'll end at the stunning Kilohana Lookout with views of Wainiha and Hanalei Valleys - a destination that rewards the effort with a perspective of Kauai's landscape few ever witness.
